Washington: "G7" Studying the price ceiling for Russian oil

The US State Department said that the United States and the G7 countries are exploring the possibility of setting a price point for Russian oil in consultation with third countries.

A State Department spokesman explained: “U.S. President Joe Biden and the G7 leaders are intensively studying the issue of setting a price ceiling for Russian oil, are consulting with third countries, have instructed the Treasury and Energy Ministries to move forward with the proposal.”

Earlier, during a briefing at the White House, Assistant to the President of the United States for National Security Affairs Jake Sullivan said that the main goal of the United States in this context is to reduce oil revenues for Russia.

Sullivan added that this should be done with the least possible impact on consumers at gas stations.

Western countries continue to discuss various measures to reduce Russia’s revenues from oil and gas exports.

So far, they have not been able to do this either due to the oil embargo, including by the European Union, or due to the voluntary abandonment of foreign companies.

Russia has been able to redirect exports and alternative supply plans, allowing it to maintain budget revenues even with discounts on its oil.
