Protests in Rome over friendly match in Israel

Fans of the Italian club Roma protested, stating their refusal to host a friendly match of their team against Tottenham Hotspur in the occupied city of Haifa on 30 July.

Fans posted a poster near the club’s training center with the inscription: “There can be no friendly matches in the occupying country.”

Fans affixed a banner to a set of signatures from Roma’s Corva Sud fans at the South Stadium, who announced they would not host the match in Israel.

“The match against Tottenham will be an important step in preparation for the new season,” said Roma general manager Thiago Pinto.

He continued: “Playing in Haifa in Israel will be a very important experience for all of us and we strive to live it,” the club’s website states.
