US official: Sanctions against Russia do not work like a guillotine and take time

U.S. Deputy Secretary of Commerce Alan Estevez said that U.S. sanctions against Russia will pay off in the long run and that they “do not work like a guillotine” and therefore should not be expected to have a quick impact.

“It doesn’t work like a guillotine,” Estevez said, noting that in the long run, Moscow won’t be able to get all the products the defense sector needs, even if sanctions can be circumvented.

He added: “The bypass methods will not give the necessary results in terms of scale in relation to the restoration of the capabilities of their armed forces.”

He pointed out that the supply of electronic chips to Russia has decreased by about 70%, and the import of large goods is also difficult due to restrictions imposed by the United States and its allies.

Estevez added that the United States expects Russia’s military capabilities to decline over time due to the difficulties associated with Western sanctions, while Ukraine’s capabilities will increase with Western military assistance.
