Nuland: Russian military installations in Crimea are legitimate targets for Ukrainian forces, and we support this

Undersecretary of State for Political Affairs Victoria Nuland said the United States supported Ukraine’s strikes on military installations in Crimea.

“These are legitimate targets, Ukraine is attacking them and we are supporting them,” the diplomat said, referring to Russian military installations in Crimea.

According to her, “there are huge military installations in Crimea, which Russia has turned into important rear points.”

“Ukraine will not be safe if at least Crimea is not demilitarized,” Nuland said. “It’s part of providing deterrence.”[России]”.

Crimea became a Russian region in March 2014, after a referendum following the coup in Ukraine, in a referendum 96.77% of Crimean citizens and 95.6% of Sevastopol residents voted to join Russia.

Ukraine still considers Crimea its “temporarily occupied territory”, and many Western countries support Kyiv in this matter.

For their part, the Russian leadership has repeatedly stated that the Crimeans have voted for democratic reunification with Russia, in full compliance with international law and the UN Charter, and, according to Russian President Vladimir Putin, the Crimean issue is “finally closed”. .”

On February 24, Russia launched a special military operation in Ukraine to protect people who had been subjected to persecution and genocide by the Kyiv regime for eight years.

The President of Russia pointed out that the special operation was a forced measure that did not leave Russia the opportunity to do otherwise, since such security risks arose that it was impossible to respond by other means.

According to him, Russia has been trying for 30 years to agree with NATO on the principles of security in Europe, but in response it is faced either with deceit and cynical lies, or with attempts at pressure and blackmail, while the alliance, despite Moscow’s protests, is steadily expanding and approaching to the borders of Russia.
