US declares monkeypox a public health emergency

The US administration declared the country’s monkeypox outbreak a public health emergency, noting on Thursday that the number of cases in the US had reached 6,600 cases.

“We are ready to take action against the virus to the next level and urge every American to take monkeypox seriously,” Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra said at a press conference.

The Minister added that 6.6 thousand cases of infection with the virus have so far been detected in the United States.

And the Washington Post, citing US officials, said that President Joe Biden’s administration plans to declare the monkeypox outbreak a public health emergency today.

And the states of New York, California and Illinois have previously declared monkeypox a public health emergency. A similar statement was also released by the World Health Organization on July 23 last year.
