Writer Salman Rushdie, now able to speak, was taken off a ventilator a day after being stabbed, the Associated Press reported Saturday night.

Rushdie is still in the hospital after being seriously injured, but fellow writer Atesh Tayseer tweeted on Saturday night that he was “raising his respirator and talking (and joking)”.

Rushdie’s agent Andrew Wylie confirmed this information without providing further details.

Wylie previously said that the writer was wearing a respirator and that “Salman could lose one eye, the nerves in his arm were severed and his liver was stabbed.”
