Supporters of former UK finance minister Rishi Sunak, who previously nominated his candidacy for the post of new leader of the Conservative Party and prime minister, are trying to persuade former health minister Sajid Javid to support his candidacy.
On Friday, Rishi Sunak officially announced his candidacy for the new leader of the Conservative Party and prime minister.
Earlier Saturday, the Financial Times reported that allies of Boris Johnson, who announced his resignation as prime minister and head of the Conservative Party, intend to block Sunak’s candidacy to succeed Johnson.
Johnson, who succeeded Theresa May as prime minister in 2019, announced last Thursday that he would step down as prime minister and leader of the UK Conservative Party but remain in office until a new prime minister is appointed.
