The Sakurajima volcano erupted in southwestern Japan.

The Japan Meteorological Agency reported on Sunday that the Sakurajima volcano on the island of Kyushu in southwest Japan had erupted.

The department added that the third degree of danger on a five-point scale was declared in the area of ​​the volcano.

Surveillance footage from the area shows thick smoke coming out of the volcano’s crater. Local media have not yet reported details about the consequences of the eruption.

Sakurajima Volcano is one of Japan’s most active volcanoes with regular eruptions and is located on a peninsula in a bay near the large city of Kagoshima. The height of the mountain is about 1.1 thousand meters.
