Sri Lankan Supreme Court Summons Fugitive President

The Supreme Court of Sri Lanka subpoenaed former President Gotabai Rajapaksa, who left Sri Lanka due to the economic crisis and protests.

Local media reported that the memorandum requires the former president to stand trial on August 1.

The court is asking the former president to testify in an investigation into those responsible for the economic crisis in Sri Lanka.

Rajapaksa left Sri Lanka on July 15, submitting his resignation from his post, amid a severe economic crisis, expressed in the lack of foreign exchange, fuel, fertilizer, food and medicine.

Former Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe was elected as the country’s new president. He calculated that it would take 3 years to overcome the crisis, which he called “the worst in the history of the country”.
