Hungarian Foreign Minister Petr Sziarto said NATO and Russia should keep channels of communication open to prevent a direct clash over the Ukraine crisis.
“Strategic channels of communication must be maintained to avoid a direct confrontation between NATO and Russia and prevent unintended escalation,” the minister said at the NATO summit in Madrid.
Commenting on the new strategic concept of NATO, Ciarto said that the alliance “will not supply weapons to Ukraine”, and individual countries send weapons to Kyiv based on their own decisions.
In the new concept adopted at the Madrid summit, NATO stressed that it “poses no threat” to Russia and does not seek confrontation. At the same time, NATO considered Russia “the most important and immediate threat to the security of allies, peace and stability in the Euro-Atlantic region.”
