Guterres cautions against artificial intelligence, which is as perilous as nuclear war

On Monday, UN Secretary-General António Guterres warned of the dangers of artificial intelligence, calling for the creation of a regulatory body for it.

“The concern about the newest form of AI — generative AI — is deafening right now,” he said at a press conference in New York.

In his speech, which was posted on Twitter, he stressed that “scientists and experts called for action, saying that artificial intelligence is an existential threat to humanity, no less than nuclear war.”

He emphasized that, despite its possibilities and advantages, “it is clear that there are also serious problems presented in the possibility of overturning a human decision.”

He expressed his support for the idea of creating an international artificial intelligence agency similar to the International Atomic Energy Agency, noting that “new technologies are developing at a tremendous speed, as well as the threats associated with them.”
