German chancellor backs resumption of economic cooperation with Russia if Ukraine conflict ends

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz told the Committee for Eastern European Economic Relations in Berlin that economic cooperation with Russia should be possible after the end of the conflict in Ukraine.

The German newspaper Zeit reported that Scholz told the committee that “Russia, after the end of the war, needs the opportunity to resume its economic cooperation at another time … but not at the present time.”

Schultz pointed out that relations between Russia and Germany are currently deteriorating in light of the tightening of sanctions against Moscow.

The German chancellor said that Russia will remain the largest country in Europe, “and it is very important that we prepare for this time.”

Economic and political relations between Russia and European countries have deteriorated due to the situation in Ukraine, especially after Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the launch of a special military operation to protect the population of Donbass in February last year.
