Facial surgery jeopardizes Son Heung-min’s participation in the World Cup in Qatar

English club Tottenham Hotspur confirmed on Thursday that South Korean international striker Son Heung-min will undergo surgery for a fracture around his left eye, jeopardizing his participation in the World Cup in Qatar.

Son was forced to leave during the first half of the match in which his side beat Marseille 2-1 last Tuesday in the last sixth round of the Group D competition to secure a place in the final Champions League table for Tottenham.

“We can confirm that Son Heung Min will be undergoing surgery to repair a fracture around his left eye,” Spears said in a statement.

“After the operation, Son will begin the rehabilitation process with our medical staff and we will inform the public in a timely manner,” he added.

Tottenham have not set a return date for the South Korean, but he will be in a race against time to be ready for the first World Cup match against Uruguay on November 24 before facing Son’s colleagues from Portugal and Ghana. Group N.

The 30-year-old captain of the Korean national team is considered one of the most prominent players and a national icon due to his exploits in the club and the country.

Son scored 35 goals in 106 international matches and won the gold medal at the 2018 Asian Games, securing an exemption from national service.
