"bloomberg"EU considers using frozen Russian assets to rebuild Ukraine

The Bloomberg agency reported, citing its sources, that the European Union is considering the possibility of using the assets of the Central Bank of the Russian Federation frozen in the Union to finance the restoration of Ukraine.

Sources indicated that discussions are still at an early stage, as lawyers are looking into the possibility of forfeiting some of the assets.

It is noteworthy that such a decision requires a revision of the existing legal framework.

According to Bloomberg sources, the same issue was raised in the United States, but at the moment it is not known whether the US authorities will take any such steps.

US Treasury Department officials warned in May that the seizure of Russian assets could set a dangerous precedent that would lead other central banks to move their assets out of the United States.

The European Commission announced at the end of October that the volume of Russian assets frozen in the European Union amounted to 17.5 billion euros, belonging to approximately 1,350 Russian individuals and legal entities.
