World Health Organization commends easing US sanctions on Damascus and Syrian government’s cooperation

World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Ghebreyesus welcomed the easing of US sanctions on Syria and praised the Syrian government’s agreement to facilitate the delivery of international aid to earthquake victims.

“We welcome the easing of sanctions by the United States. We equally appreciate the Syrian government’s recent full support for UN cross-border transport, as well as measures to increase cross-border access,” Ghebreyesus said.

“This afternoon I met with Assad, who said he was ready to consider additional access points across the border in case of this emergency,” he added.

He noted that on Sunday, the World Health Organization appealed to the international community to allocate $43 million to support humanitarian operations in Syria and Turkey.

Earlier, Syria asked UN member states, the organization’s General Secretariat, its agencies and related funds, the International Committee of the Red Cross and others for help in response to the devastating earthquake.
