White House: Zelensky should attend G20 summit if Putin comes there

The White House has announced that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is to attend the G20 summit on the Indonesian island of Bali if Russian President Vladimir Putin does so.

“As President Biden has publicly stated, he does not believe that President Putin should attend the G20 summit while he is at war with Ukraine,” the US National Security Council said in a statement Friday.

He added that if Putin comes to the summit, the United States believes that Zelensky should also attend.

Indonesian President Joko Widodo said he expects Russian President Vladimir Putin to attend the November summit.

US President Joe Biden has previously called for Russia to be excluded from the G-20 because of its military operation in Ukraine, but acknowledged that other members of the group may disagree with him.

White House officials said Washington privately told Indonesia that it would not like to invite Russia to the summit, but the Kremlin confirmed that Putin had been invited.
