Water expert talks about Ethiopian failure "big" Power generation at the Renaissance Dam

Abbas Sharaki, a professor of geology and water resources at Cairo University, said Ethiopia is only generating about 50 megawatts of electricity thanks to the Renaissance Dam.

He added during a televised appearance on Saturday night that the Renaissance Dam lake turbine only runs an hour a day due to low water levels, which did not reach 74 billion cubic meters of water as planned.

He pointed out that the first storage of the Renaissance dam, which took place in 2020, was planned for 18 and a half billion cubic meters of water, but only 5 billion have been accumulated.

He added: “Next year they were supposed to reach 18.5 billion cubic meters, but in the second filling they only accumulated 3 billion cubic meters of water.”

He emphasized that the total volume accumulated during the first and second filling of the Ethiopian dam “was 8 billion cubic meters of water”, explaining that the reserves of the Renaissance dam this year will not exceed 6 billion cubic meters of water, bringing the total to 14 billion cubic meters, which is the original power.

He pointed out that in July of this year, Ethiopia started the dam’s third reservoir, noting that the amount of water in the High Dam would make up for the reservation of any other water.
