Washington, Paris and London urge Moscow to reaffirm its commitment not to start a nuclear war

The foreign ministers of the United States, France and Great Britain called on Russia to abandon the “dangerous” nuclear rhetoric and reaffirm its commitment to the principle of the inadmissibility of nuclear war.

The three ministers met in New York on the sidelines of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and declared their “deep awareness that there is no winner in a nuclear war and that it cannot be unleashed.”

“We call on Russia to stop its dangerous and irresponsible nuclear rhetoric and behavior, fulfill its international obligations and reaffirm in word and deed the principles enshrined in a recent statement to prevent nuclear war and an arms race,” the joint statement says.

In a statement dated January 3, 2022, the leaders of Russia, China, the UK, the US and France laid out their primary responsibility to prevent war between nuclear-weapon states and reduce strategic risks.

They stressed that nuclear weapons serve defensive purposes and their proliferation must be prevented.

Earlier, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said that the United States and its allies, having unleashed a hybrid confrontation with Russia over Ukraine, are dangerously teetering on the brink of a conflict between nuclear powers, and their attempts to blame Moscow for this are “completely rejected.”
