US: We are concerned about reports of renewed hostilities in Ethiopia

The United States of America called on the Ethiopian government and the Tigray Liberation Front to negotiate to end the resumption of hostilities, saying the five-month truce had saved “countless lives.”

“We are concerned about reports of renewed hostilities in Ethiopia and call on the Ethiopian government and the Tigray Liberation Front to redouble their efforts to advance negotiations to achieve a permanent ceasefire without preconditions,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Vidant Patel said.

Fighting between Tigray rebels and government forces in northern Ethiopia has resumed for the first time in five months, breaking the truce and hurting hopes for peace talks to end the 21-month-old conflict.

The two camps exchanged responsibility for breaking the truce and resuming hostilities.
