A US State Department spokesman said that President Joe Biden’s administration had briefed Congress on the appointment of Hadi Amr as the new Special Representative for Palestine.
Axios said the move is an advancement in US-Palestinian relations, noting that this is the first time the United States has established a position in the Foreign Office with sole responsibility for Palestinian affairs.
He explained: “This position is a promotion for Amr, who has served as Deputy Assistant Foreign Minister for Israeli-Palestinian Affairs for the past two years.”
The US official confirmed that “Amr will work under the direction of the Assistant Secretary of State for Middle East Affairs from the Palestinian Authority in Jerusalem,” noting that “the Washington-based office of the Special Representative for Palestine Affairs will work closely with the Palestinians and their leadership and will continue with Ambassador Thomas Nedis and his team to liaise with Israel on issues relating to the Palestinians.
He explained that “the establishment of the new position also aims to maximize the level of US-Palestinian relations and diplomatic representation, given that the US consulate in Jerusalem, which served as the US legation for the Palestinians, has not yet been opened,” adding: “As President Joe Biden affirmed during his visit to Israel” and in the West Bank, we remain committed to the opening of our Consulate General in Jerusalem and the two-state solution.
