Unprecedented Event: Argentine League Coach Assaults Player

Argentinean Sebastian Ariel Romero, coach of Gimnasia La Plata, attacked the player during his team’s last match.

Gimnasia La Plata beat their guest Estudiantes 2-1 in a match that took place at the Juan Carlos Serillo stadium on Sunday, March 19, 2023, as part of the eighth round of the Argentine Football League.

Romero attacked Leonardo Godoy, an Estudiantes player who was trying to catch the ball before it crossed the field.

And while Godoy was sliding on the ground to catch the ball, the player went out of bounds, but was surprised by Romero when he stepped on him.

This behavior sparked a wave of anger among the players on the opposing team, and the atmosphere between the two teams became tense before the referee issued a red card to Romero’s face.

The incident occurred 29 minutes into the first half and the result indicated Estudiantes advanced with an unanswered goal.

Despite this, Gimnasia managed to reverse his delay with a goal scored by Mauro Boselli in the fourth minute and responded with two goals that pulled out three points.

And British newspaper The Sun reported that Romero’s manager was seen celebrating on the pitch after his side scored the second goal before returning to where he was after being sent off.

Previously, Romero played for the colors of Gimnasia when he was a player in the green rectangle, and also played for the colors of French Toulouse, Real Betis and Spanish Córdoba.

Gimnasia La Plata increased their lead to 8 points, placing them in 25th place in the Argentine league standings and behind losing Estudiantes on goal difference.
