UK closes nuclear power plant

EDF Energy said Britain’s Hinkley Point B nuclear power plant was closed for good on Monday.

This was done despite a sharp increase in the cost of electricity in Britain, against the backdrop of a reduction in Russian gas supplies to Europe.

“After nearly five decades of producing low-carbon electricity, the second Hinkley Point B reactor has been shut down for the last time,” the company, which is a subsidiary of French EDF, added.

The company noted in a tweet on Twitter that the first reactor at the station was shut down on July 6 this year.

The closure of this reactor at one of the six remaining nuclear power plants in the United Kingdom comes 46 years after it was first connected to the grid.

It is noteworthy that the Hinkley Point B plant produced 3% of the electricity consumed in the country, and its production capacity was 1.1 gigawatts.

Since 1976, this nuclear power plant has produced 331 TWh.
