Tokyo to host 2025 World Championships in Athletics

The International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) announced Thursday that the capital of Japan has been selected to host the 20th World Championships in 2025.

“In 2025, Tokyo will have the opportunity to fill its Olympic stadium with athletics enthusiasts who have been denied the opportunity to attend the Tokyo Olympics due to epidemic restrictions,” the International Federation said in a statement.

Tokyo overtook the cities of Singapore, Nairobi and Silesia (Poland).

This is the second time that Tokyo has hosted the World Cup after the first in 1991, in a version in which American Mike Powell broke the long jump world record (8.95 m) which still stands today, erasing another record for his compatriot. Bob Beamon (8.90 m) achieved in 1968.

The International Federation Council met Wednesday and Thursday on the sidelines of the 18th World Championship, which starts Friday in Eugene, Oregon, after it was postponed for a year due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The World Championships in Athletics will be held in the USA for the first time.

The nineteenth edition will take place next year in Budapest.
