The Thorny Issues of Choosing a New Actor and Director for the James Bond Saga

Choosing a new actor isn’t the only thorny issue for the James Bond saga

Next October, the release of the film James Bond 007: Dying Can Wait will already celebrate its second anniversary. Time passes quickly, just like for Daniel Craig who signed there his fifth and last appearance in the skin of the spy having the license to kill. Now, it is a question, as well for him as for Amazon and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM), of passing the torch to a new actor, and we can say that this subject unleashes passions because everyone has their favorite in mind and dreams of seeing him put on the costume of agent 007. Nevertheless, some of the targeted players have decided to withdraw from the race.

Recently, it was the British actor Idris Elba who made the choice to draw a line under this major role.

In particular, he confessed disgusted by the many derogatory comments very often in connection with his skin color, considered incompatible with that of the spy in the service of His Majesty. Little by little, the list is reduced: the noises of corridor continue to relay the name of Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Tom Hardy, Henry Cavill or even Tom Hiddleston. Despite everything, this is not the only passing of the torch to be expected since, in parallel, there is the question of the director of the next part.

He refused the offer, the director of one of the best James Bonds will not return…

Beyond looking for the headliner who will be facing the camera, it will also be necessary to put a name on the one who will stage the next adventures of the double agent 0. In this case, it’s Cary Joji Fukunaga (above all known for the masterful first season of the series True Detective) who took on this role for the filming of James Bond 007: Dying Can Wait. Will he return to direct the 26th feature film dedicated to the British spy? It is still early to say, but we already know that another director seems categorical about his return to the head of the film franchise.

We were already talking about it in 2015, the year of the release of 007 Specter, but Sam Mendes definitely seems to have turned the page on the saga. Director of the feature film mentioned above, as well as Sky Fall three years earlier, Sam Mendes had managed to rectify the situation after a shutter Quantum of Solace which had not really been unanimous with the spectators. So inevitably, on the side of the producers, we want to grant our talents to accompany the new face of the franchise. Despite an extremely generous proposal, Sam Mendes explained to Empire that he had simply declined the offer, explaining that his current commitments vis-à-vis theatrical productions did not allow him to fully assume this role.
