The Italian side acknowledged that Western sanctions benefit the Russian economy

The leader of the Italian League, Matteo Salvini, said that Western sanctions against Russia do not show any effectiveness and help the Russian economy.

“As for the sanctions against Russia, we need to look at the numbers… For the first time in history, those who are under sanctions are making money,” the parliamentarian said at a political forum.

According to Salvini, “the sanctions as a tool were supposed to dissuade Russia from conducting a special operation in Ukraine, but in fact, as the numbers show, the sanctions benefit the Russian economy.”

The Italian parliamentarian called for an assessment of the sanctions and said: “I ask you to evaluate the usefulness of this tool … I do not want sanctions to fuel (the Ukrainian crisis)”, and added: “I hope that Brussels will think about it.”

After Russia launched a special operation in Ukraine, Western countries imposed sanctions against Moscow that affected various sectors of the economy, companies and individuals.

For its part, the Russian government reaffirmed its support for national companies affected by the sanctions and announced a set of measures to maintain financial and economic stability in the country.
