The European Union is considering the possibility of introducing a ban on the import of gold from Russia

The European Union said it was ready to explore the possibility of imposing a ban on the import of gold from Russia, adding that it was important that the sanctions did not harm the EU economy.

This was stated by the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, at a press conference today, Sunday, on the sidelines of the G7 summit at Elmau Castle in the German state of Bavaria.

In response to a question from journalists about whether the EU wants to follow the example of the US, Canada, Japan and the UK by introducing a ban on the import of gold from the Russian Federation, he said that the Union is ready to study this measure if it does not harm the European economy.

Earlier, the British government announced that the UK, US, Canada and Japan would ban Russian gold imports as part of new sanctions against Moscow in response to its own military operation in Ukraine.
