The Sonic Frontiers director affirms that gamers may anticipate more 2D side-scrolling titles. Morio Kishimoto, the creator of the most recent mainstream game, has been active on Twitter a lot and has been more than eager to respond to queries from players about it and other matters about the Sonic franchise. This involves answering fan inquiries about upcoming Sonic games and giving Sonic Frontiers’ DLC updates on the game’s development. A fan recently questioned the director regarding the fate of 2D Sonic games.

Even though Sonic the Hedgehog has appeared in many 3D games, the series has also seen a lot of 2D-focused spin-offs throughout the years. Sonic Team has attempted to combine 2D and 3D gameplay perspectives with varying degrees of success in titles like Sonic Generations and Sonic Forces. Takashi Iizuka, the head of Sonic Team, even said that moving forward, 2D and 3D gameplay would remain distinct. As a result, Sonic Origins and Sonic Frontiers were released in 2022. Upon being questioned on Twitter about if other 2D games would be created, Kishimoto responded in the affirmative.

The question was posed by @RealJellyLord on Twitter, who wrote that he adored Sonic 4 as a child and questioned whether gamers would see another game similar to it again, possibly in a partnership with Dimps. According to Kishimoto, there will be more side-scrolling 2D Sonic games in the future, similar to 3D Sonic games like Sonic Frontiers. This, however, does not imply that a game is in progress; rather, it suggests that more 2D games will ultimately join the 3D ones in the Sonic series.

A leak from the previous summer accurately foresaw several Sonic announcements for 2022. This contained the Sonic Prime debut, the Sonic Origins bundle, the first Sonic Frontiers demonstration, and two announcements about upcoming Sonic games in 2023. One of these is a brand-new Sonic game for mobile devices; a 2D Sonic game including Sonic, Tails, Amy, Knuckles, and Shadow the Hedgehog is currently under development. Kishimoto might be referring to this 2D Sonic game, and while it might meet the description and be one game, it should be treated with caution, as with any other rumor or leak.

The first downloadable content for Sonic Frontiers is about to be available. According to Kishimoto, who shared this update on Twitter in response to Sonic Frontiers’ most recent sales report, the first DLC update’s construction has reached its final stages. Regarding the first update to Sonic Frontiers, he praised the audience for their patience.

On the PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S, Sonic Frontiers is currently available.
