With Gears 6, former Gears of War author Joshua Ortega has hinted at a return to the franchise.
This week, Ortega self-quote tweeted on Twitter with the phrase “Once again it’s on!” and a link to an earlier article about his work on the Gears of War series.

Ortega responded with “Hmm…” and three lightning bolt emojis to a comment inquiring if he was still working on Gears. Afterward, Ortega polled his followers on Twitter about whether they favored the name Gears of War 6 or Gears 6.

Although it’s not explicitly confirmed, it seems likely that the American author and comics writer will participate in the upcoming Gears game in some capacity. Before Gears of War 2, Ortega contributed to the first thirteen issues of the DC Comics prequel comic book series for Gears of War.
Ortega mentions his involvement in “the plot and narrative level design for Gears 3” in his Twitter thread. He also mentions inventing many characters for the game. Other projects he’s worked on in the business include Ghost of Tsushima, Shadow Complex, Viva Piata, and Law/Breakers.
There has yet to be an official announcement for the sixth game in the Gears of War series. But Microsoft submitted a fresh trademark application for Gears of War last year. It was announced earlier this month that the game is now The Coalition’s main emphasis. The Coalition took over the video game production from Gears of War 4 onward.
The Gears of War series has to be completed, even though a new main game is still a ways off. Netflix revealed the creation of an adult animated series and a live-action Gears of War movie last year.
