Supreme Court Upholds Web Designer’s Right to Decline Same-Sex Wedding Services

The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that a Colorado-based graphic designer refuses to design websites about same-sex marriage because it conflicts with her religious beliefs.

Designer Laurie Smith feared government officials would stop her from designing heterosexual wedding venues, so she went to the country’s highest court, where a conservative majority of six judges ruled in her favor.

Smith feared the state could use Colorado’s anti-discrimination law against her, which prohibits businesses from providing “full and equal” goods and services to any customer “regardless of race, religion, disability, or sexual orientation.”

Three liberal judges opposed the decision of their conservative colleagues, calling it a “license to discriminate”.

In the lawsuit, Smith said she was willing to work with anyone, but would not produce content that was contrary to the Bible, which views marriage as a union between a man and a woman.
