Military Council in Niger Refuses to Receive ECOWAS Delegation

The media reported that the military council in Niger refused to receive the ECOWAS delegation under the current circumstances due to security concerns.

Security Concerns prevent ECOWAS Delegation from being Received

In a letter addressed to the ECOWAS office in Niamey, the Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated: “The current context of public anger and indignation over the sanctions imposed by ECOWAS does not allow the above-mentioned delegation to be received in a calm and safe environment.”

ECOWAS Imposes Sanctions on Niger

On July 30, ECOWAS announced the imposition of sanctions against Niger, including the closure of its country’s airspace to Niger and the suspension of trade exchanges with it, against the backdrop of the military coming to power and the resignation of President Mohamed Bazum.

Military Junta Rejects ECOWAS Sanctions

Last Thursday, Abderrahman Chiani, head of Niger’s military junta, rejected the sanctions imposed by ECOWAS, calling them illegal, unjust and inhumane.
