Russian banking giant begins operations in Crimea this year

The President of the Republic of Crimea, Sergei Aksyonov, said in a TV interview that the giant bank Sberbank had announced its intention to start operations on the peninsula in 2023.

The first offices of Sberbank in Crimea will open in six months, and ATMs will start working in 2023.

The President of the Republic of Crimea confirmed that since 2014 a lot of efforts have been made to develop the banking sector in the face of Western sanctions imposed on the peninsula.

Sergei Aksyonov noted that the arrival of such a major player as Sberbank would increase the availability, speed and quality of banking services for the population, have a positive impact on the financial and investment climate, and help develop the economy and social sphere of the region.

In addition to the Republic of Crimea, the Sevastopol Bank will operate in Sevastopol. The governor of the city, Mikhail Razvogaev, said that the office of Sberbank will appear here in the first half of this year.

It is noteworthy that Sberbank, like other large Russian banks, was unable to operate in Crimea due to Western sanctions. Local banks operated in Crimea, the largest of which was the RNKB bank, as well as the Rossiya bank, Genbank, and others.
