Russia to Supply Fertilizers to Sri Lanka’s Agricultural Sector

Sri Lankan Transport Minister Bandula Gunawardana said his country had lifted the ban on chemical fertilizers and wanted to buy them, including from Russia.

In an interview with Novosti agency, he said: “Today fertilizer prices in Sri Lanka are affordable for farmers. We can consider buying fertilizers in Russia, which will be more economically beneficial for our country, and the Ministry of Agriculture will discuss this issue with Russian representatives.”

He indicated that the authorities of his country agreed to purchase 45,000 tons of potassium chloride and 36,000 tons of phosphate fertilizers in 2022-2023.

He added: “And we can make payments in national currencies,” explaining that this type of payment would be convenient for his country, which is now experiencing a serious currency crisis and there are “a few dollars” in the country.
