US Navy Chief of Staff Admiral Michael Gilday warned that a possible default by Washington on the national debt would be disastrous for the US military.
Gilday said during a seminar for the Council on Foreign Relations on Monday: “We have not been in a situation where there is no stability and predictability regarding the public debt ceiling. So it’s very difficult to predict anything.”
“Of course, this will have serious consequences for sailors, military personnel, their families and the democratic arsenal of the country,” he added.
He also warned that a debt default could undermine the confidence of allies and partners in the United States.
He added: “So I think it could be a disaster for us and it’s not easy for me to talk about it.”
It is reported that Congress and the administration of US President Joe Biden have not yet reached an agreement to increase the ceiling of the US national debt, set at $ 31.4 trillion, and Washington could face default on debts next June.
