US Under Secretary of Defense for Political Affairs Colin Cole said that China is in the process of increasing its nuclear arsenal by 3-4 times.
“China is building up its nuclear arsenal at a very fast pace. Three or even four times,” Cole said.
Cole noted that the US administration had previously heard Chinese statements about its intention to discuss issues of strategic stability, but Washington “does not see Beijing’s real readiness for such actions.”
At the same time, he stressed that his country would not want to slide into a conflict with China.
“One of the positive things that we saw in the situation around Taiwan was the absence of nuclear threats from China,” he said.
