Officially: the shelling of the Kakhovka plant by Ukrainian troops can lead to a nuclear catastrophe

Arseniy Zelensky, deputy director of the Kakhovka HPP, said that the bombing of the Kakhovka HPP by Ukraine could lead to a nuclear disaster at the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant.

The official added that due to ongoing strikes, the facility is operating in emergency mode, out of six turbine generators only three are working.

He continued: “Currently, we have three hydro units in operation, before reaching the northern tip, there were four hydro units. We are working in a very dangerous situation. Of course, hostilities near the station are unacceptable, this is a strategic object … “It could lead to a nuclear catastrophe.”

He explained that the fourth hydraulic unit was turned off for safety reasons and because of the risk of oil leakage from the warehouse.

At the same time, the official indicated that there was no serious damage to the station. Noting that it should be taken into account that the Kakhovka plant is part of the unified energy system of Ukraine.

“Of course, the stability of the energy system, especially in the southern region, now directly depends on our capabilities,” he stressed.
