North Korea: Newly discovered fever is the flu, not the corona

North Korea’s central news agency attributed an outbreak of suspected cases of fever in the northeastern province of Ryangjang earlier this week to influenza.

Earlier in North Korea, it was reported that 4 cases with suspected “virulent epidemic” were detected in the province of Ryangzhang, bordering China, on Tuesday, two weeks after Pyongyang declared victory over the coronavirus pandemic that began in mid-May.

In this regard, the official DPRK Central News Agency stated, “According to the information received from the State Headquarters for the Prevention of Emergency Epidemics, all cases of fever that occurred in Ryangzhang were cases of influenza.”

And health authorities urged citizens to wear masks and report to the competent authorities at their places if they show symptoms of a fever, noting that the flu can easily occur in all regions of the country.

North Korea’s central news agency confirmed that fever patients’ temperatures had returned to normal levels and the area’s closure was lifted.

Notably, on August 10, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un declared victory over Covid-19 and ordered the authorities to lift the country’s “extreme emergency measures to combat the virus.”
