Qatar’s Nasser Al-Khelaifi, president of French football club Paris Saint-Germain, said a deal with Argentine star Lionel Messi was profitable in less than a year despite his modest level in his first season with the team.
Al-Khelaifi said in statements to the French newspapers “Le Parisien” and “Marca” in Spanish: “There is no place to talk about a player who has won seven golden balls, Messi has written history.”
He added: “It’s true that it wasn’t his best season, but after more than 20 years at Barcelona, he was exploring a whole new situation: a country, a city, a competition, a team, and also a different culture.”
Al-Khelaifi pointed out that: “The same applies to his family as Messi was infected with the Corona virus so it was not easy.”
The head of the Paris team continued: “I am sure that next season we will see Messi with a better image and game.”
Nasser Al-Khelaifi concluded his statements: “We have reached an excellent agreement with Messi on and off the field and in less than a year the deal is already profitable.”
Messi joined the French side on a free transfer after failing to reach an agreement with Barcelona and has only scored 11 goals in 34 matches against Paris Saint-Germain in all competitions.
Lionel Messi’s contract with Paris Saint-Germain expires at the end of next season with an option to extend for another season.
