More than 15 thousand people protest in Brussels against high prices

More than 15,000 demonstrators braved the freezing cold in the Belgian capital Brussels on Friday to demand more protection against rising energy prices and higher wages to fight runaway inflation.

The protest, backed by the three main trade unions, has affected public services across Belgium, especially the rail and underground systems in and around the capital, as well as Brussels International Airport.

As rising prices put more pressure on people, unions are demanding higher wages at a time when companies like the energy giants are making huge profits. The protesters seek to freeze energy prices and raise taxes on capital.

“We will not stop until the workers get what they deserve,” the unions said in a statement.

Police estimated the number of protesters marching through the freezing cold at around 16,500.
