Monkeypox detected in Pakistan for the first time

Pakistani authorities announced on Tuesday that a man had tested positive for monkeypox, the first confirmed case in Pakistan.

Health officials did not provide further details about the man’s injury.

Officials said airport and hospital authorities have been alerted to monitor new cases.

Relatives of the man who tested positive were tested and advised to self-isolate to prevent the spread of the virus, according to Pakistan’s state-run Associated Press.

Monkeypox is a rare but potentially serious viral illness that usually starts with a flu-like illness and swollen lymph nodes and then progresses to a rash.

Most people recover within a few weeks without requiring hospitalization.
