Mitsotakis recognizes "by mistake" Greek intelligence services in the context of a spy scandal

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis called the secret services’ surveillance of a socialist MEP turned leader of the socialist opposition “a politically unacceptable mistake”.

In a televised speech, Mitsotakis said that this monitoring process was carried out “legitimately” after obtaining approval from the prosecutor’s office of the Supreme Court, but that it “was a mistake.”

He added: “I didn’t know about it. If I had known, I wouldn’t have let this happen,” describing the work being done by the National Intelligence Service as “politically unacceptable” while criticizing the agency’s “years of failure.”

Two resignations, including that of the head of the National Intelligence Service, dealt a major blow to the Mitsotakis government on Friday after revelations about cell phone monitoring by Nikos Androulacis, leader of the Pasok Kenal party, the third party in parliament.

The resignation comes ten days after Nikos Androlakis denounced an “attempt to control” his mobile phone with illegal Predator software.
