Medvedev quotes George Orwell’s British novel in response to Stoltenberg’s remarks.

Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council Dmitry Medvedev commented on NATO’s call for increased military assistance to Ukraine, saying: “The past is erased, erased forgotten, and the lie has become the truth,” a quote from a literary source.

Medvedev’s comment came as a quotation from British writer George Orwell’s 1984 and in response to NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg’s call for more Kyiv when he said: “Arms are the real path to peace.”

“We are old,” he said. “Actually, weapons are the right way to peace,” Stoltenberg said.

And he wrote on his Twitter blog: “The past is erased, the erasure is forgotten, and the lie has become the truth” George Orwell, 1984.

The NATO press service previously stated that its Secretary General “emphasized the importance of supporting Ukraine, including with additional weapons.”

The statement notes that Stoltenberg also “emphasized the need for allies to invest more in defense, remove dependence on authoritarian regimes, and stand together for freedom and democracy.” As he says.
