Lavrov: Joining four regions is a logical continuation of the reunification of Russian lands

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that the annexation of four regions to Russia is a logical continuation of the reunification of Russian lands, which began with the return of Crimea and Sevastopol in 2014.

This happened during his speech before the State Duma of Russia before the decision to ratify the treaties on the accession of the Donetsk and Lugansk republics, Kherson and Zaporozhye regions to Russia.

On Friday, September 30, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed agreements with the rulers of the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics, Kherson and Zaporozhye regions on their admission to Russia based on the results of referendums held there.

For his part, a member of the Federation Council Committee on Constitutional Legislation explained that the entry of new subjects into Russia is carried out on the basis of bilateral international treaties, and after receiving such a proposal from a subject wishing to join, the presidents of the Russian Federation and the State Duma, and after the signing of an international treaty, the head of the state asks the Constitutional Court to verify compliance with the terms of the international treaty, and the draft federal constitutional law on the admission of a new subject to the Russian Federation is submitted to parliament.
