The Containment of China: Japanese, US, and South Korean Leaders Plan Trilateral Summit
Introduction
The Japanese newspaper Nikkei reported that Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, US President Joe Biden, and South Korean President Yoon Seok Yul are planning to negotiate a containment of China during a trilateral summit.
Expanding Cooperation
The newspaper pointed out that Friday’s summit at Camp David in the United States will expand cooperation between the three countries, which was initially focused on resolving North Korea’s nuclear and missile programs, including China’s deterrence and economic security.
Discussion Topics
The leaders are expected to discuss “the importance of peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait” and provide support to countries in the global south, especially the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) countries and the Pacific.
Previous Meeting
The previous meeting of the leaders of the three countries took place on May 21 on the sidelines of the G7 summit in Hiroshima.
