Israeli settler kills Palestinian in alleged knife attack

The Palestinian Ministry of Health announced that today, Saturday, an Israeli killed a 42-year-old Palestinian in a settlement outpost in the West Bank. The Israeli army said a Palestinian tried to stab an Israeli.

The Palestinian Ministry of Health identified the man as Tariq Maali, 42, and said only that he had been shot northwest of the West Bank city of Ramallah.

The IDF said the man arrived at the outpost and attempted to stab an Israeli civilian. Israeli media reported that he was armed with a knife and that a settler shot him.

Palestinians and human rights organizations accuse Israel of using excessive force against Palestinians who have carried out a number of shooting, stabbing and car-ramming operations in recent years.

The Israeli military says soldiers, and in some cases civilians, find themselves in difficult and life-threatening situations.

Tensions have escalated in the West Bank, where the Israeli army has carried out raids and arrests almost every night since last spring after a spate of Palestinian attacks on Israelis killed 19 people. Another 10 Israelis were killed in a second series of attacks late last year.
