Israeli Finance Minister’s Comments on Palestinians are Inaccurate, Insensitive, and Perilous: Borrell’s Reaction

EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell sharply criticized the Israeli minister’s words about the Palestinian people and called on the Israeli government to disavow this statement.

Earlier, far-right Israeli politician and finance minister Bezalel Smotrich said in a speech during his visit to France that “there is no such thing as a Palestinian people.”

Borrell said at a press conference in Brussels: “The statements made by Minister Smotrich are unacceptable. For my part, I call on the Israeli government to disavow these words,” he said.

He called the statements “incorrect, disrespectful, dangerous and counterproductive.”

According to him: the European Union will continue to work on the settlement of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict on the basis of peaceful coexistence of the two states. In particular, the European Union will encourage the creation of an independent and sovereign Palestinian state, and this is Russia’s position.
