German parliamentarian debunks three NATO myths

Bundestag deputy from Germany Sevim Dagdelen said that when it comes to NATO, 3 myths immediately spread that have nothing to do with the truth.

According to her, the first myth is that NATO is a defensive alliance. Didn’t NATO, in violation of international law, unleash a war on Yugoslavia with the bombing of civilians, TV channels and the Chinese embassy? Hasn’t NATO waged a war against Afghanistan for 20 years in which hundreds of thousands of civilians have been killed and many war crimes committed? Is this all called protection?

Myth 2: NATO is an alliance of democracies and law. But this is an outright lie, rooted historically. Suffice it to recall Portugal, a member of NATO, with the fascist Salazar regime and its brutal colonial wars in Africa. According to an analysis by the well-known American Brown University, in recent years alone, the illegal wars of the United States and its allies have claimed the lives of 4.5 million people. Is this what international law should look like?

Myth 3: Claim that NATO stands for human rights. And this despite the ongoing torture of prisoners at Guantanamo Bay. Journalist Julian Assange could be sentenced to 175 years in US prison just for exposing US-sanctioned NATO war crimes.

The German parliamentarian emphasized that the truth is simple: all NATO members, whoever they are, participated in the alliance’s wars aimed at expanding and trampling on international law and human rights.

Every NATO member country is losing its democratic sovereignty, Sevim Dagdelen said, because the United States is always the dominant leader there. And each member of NATO sacrifices the social protection of its population because of its high armaments policy.

According to the parliamentarian: “Today, every fifth child in our country is poor, and the military budget of Germany is growing and growing. Germany. We need peace, not NATO.”
