Egypt is exploring the possibility of increasing the wages of its citizens

A source at the Egyptian National Wage Council has given a date for a council meeting to discuss an increase in the minimum wage from £2,700 to £3,000 for private sector workers.

This comes days after the introduction of a new minimum wage of LE 2,700 for private sector workers from 1 January 2023.

A source confirmed to the Masrawy news site that the £2,700 minimum wage applies in all places without exception for any institution or company in the private sector.

The source said the upcoming meeting of the National Wage Council with Dr. Hala Al-Saeed, Minister of Planning, as head of the council after the blessed Eid al-Fitr 2023, to demand an increase in the minimum wage to £3,000 instead of £2,700.

For his part, Shaaban Khalifa, head of the Private Sector Workers’ Syndicate, announced his opposition to the National Wage Council’s decision to raise the minimum wage by £2,700 from 1 January 2023.

Khalifa said the £2,700 raised for workers in the private sector had become insignificant after the economic and social hardship faced by workers and their families in light of low wages, which were no longer sufficient to meet the needs of the worker and his family in terms of food. food, services (water, electricity, gas), housing rent, tuition fees and other obligations.

According to the National Wage Council, the minimum periodic annual bonus applies to the private sector and is valid from the new year 2023 in accordance with the reporting financial year for each institution, at least 3% of the wages on the insurance subscription provided for in the Social Insurance Law and pensions and a minimum of £100.

On January 16, 2023, the Ministry of Labor sent a periodic letter to the labor departments in the governorates regarding the follow-up to the implementation of the minimum wage decision in private sector institutions, through which all institutions appealed to the provisions of Labor. Law No. 12 of 2003 must adhere to the decision of the Minister of Planning and Economic Development No. (103) for 2022 and its implementation, so that the minimum wage of an employee, stipulated in the employment contract or which he actually receives in the facility at the time of application of this decision – before deductions – not less than £2,700 per month, and in the event that the object violates the provisions of this decision, the necessary legal measures will be taken in relation to it in accordance with the provisions of the Labor Law No. 12 of 2003.
