At least nine people have died in a prison riot in Quito, the Ecuadorian capital, according to the country’s prosecutor general’s office.
The prosecutor’s office said on social media that it had opened a “preliminary investigation into the deaths of nine people while working at the El Inca prison in Quito. In addition, procedures are being carried out to remove the bodies.”
The prison crisis in Ecuador escalated last February.
More than 400 prisoners have died in less than two years as a result of conflicts between prison gangs, police and the army in prisons in Ecuador.
