Dam breaks in China’s Liaoning province, thousands evacuated

6,393 people were urgently evacuated after a river flooded in northeast China’s Liaoning province on Monday after a dam burst, local authorities said on Tuesday.

According to the city’s public relations department, two heavy rains hit the Raoyang River in Panjin City in July. The flooding was worse than ever, according to the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology.

The split occurred at 10:30 am on Monday. The city’s Flood Prevention and Control Headquarters launched the first class of flood control rescue operations and dispatched 2,680 rescue workers, 320 engineers, and transport vehicles to the site. Flood control materials such as sandbags and wooden boards were also delivered to the site.

As of 19:00, 6393 local residents were safely evacuated. No casualties have been reported.

Rescue work continues.
