Counting the Past Confrontations of Al-Ahly and Wydad Ahead of Champions League Final

On Sunday evening, all eyes will be on the Cairo International Stadium, which will host the match between the Egyptian Al-Ahly and the Moroccan guest Widad in the first leg of the CAF Champions League final.

This confrontation is the 12th between the two teams.

In the previous 11 matches, Al-Ahly had won four to Wydad’s three, with four draws settled.

Al-Ahli players scored 13 goals against Vidad while conceding 11 goals.

Current Vidad striker Zuhair El Matraji is the top scorer in the two-team tie with three goals, ahead of the trinity of Mohsen Yajur, Waleed El Karti and Moamen Zakaria by goal difference.

Al Ahli played six matches against Wydad in the African Champions League group stage, compared to two matches in the semi-finals and three matches in the final.

The first confrontation between Al Ahli and Widad took place in the group stage of the 2011 championship, and the first match ended in a 3-3 draw in Cairo and then a 1-1 draw in Morocco.

At the time, Al Ahly were eliminated from the African Champions League in exchange for Wydad Casablanca’s qualification for the Golden Square.

Al Ahli lost in the 2017 final to Wydad after a 1–1 draw in the first leg in Egypt and a loss in Morocco with an unanswered goal.

The last confrontation between the two teams was last season, in the final of the African Champions League, which took place in one match in Morocco, and the match ended in a 2-0 victory for Wydad.
